Being White

Nigga don't you wish you were white!

So I was watching a documentary about the civil rights movement and as always the pictures are stunning, appalling and quiet disturbing. But one that stood out in mind was a picture of two white women in dresses, the typical 30 something year old house wife and their children by their sides. Their hands were well above their heads with signs that read "Nigga Don't U wish U were white".

I nearly fell to the ground.

Now I don't know if my emotions are super highly because I just had my 2nd Black Son but as a mother I could never imagine raising my children with such cruel idealology.

In any case I was floored.

So to not pass judgment on these women I tried to think of their situation. Maybe they were raised in a very racist home. Their fathers were bigots and their mothers the same or against it but too fearful of the backlash they would receive from they husbands and communities if they spoke againsted it. Maybe it was totally a way of life and maybe they didn't want to be seen as a "Nigga Lover".

But when do you put your foot down if you as a white person didn't believe in the racism or became curious enough to not let the ignorance infiltrate your mind and really see what "black" were about. Now I know this is easier said then done especially when your life is on the line. But let's not forget and give credit where credit is do. In many of the pics for the Civil Rights Movement and many well known Freedom Riders were infact white people. They did take a stand for blacks in those times.

So in the end outside of their own personsal circumstances when it boils down to it like anything else in life I guess some were stronger then others.
