Clarification

In creating and working on the development of the Black Latina Movement I have notice there is a bit of a misunderstanding as to who we spoke of and who we are addressing so this blog entry I will dedicate that to the understand of the Black Latina Movement.

The creators of the Movement myself and Apryl G. Lopez are both American Black Latina's and our experiences are as such. Our viewpoints come from an American standpoint where most of our African culture has been watered down and/or lost. From our Latino standpoint this holds true as well because in wanting to assimilate more Latinos saw the negative attitude there was for African Americans and started to slowly push themselves and disassociated themselves from it for fear of backlash.

Also in the U.S. Although we all know Latino is not a race, its an ethnicity that can fall under the African American or Caucasian umbrella the government as times in job or school applications or many documents that require reference to background will have Latino as a classification of race and therefore many Latino American are proud to have this individuality for our people.

There are tons of Black Latinos in Central and South American and the Caribbean this I know to be true aside from the fact that this is where Apryl and my families are from but the extreme difference is the struggles although at times are similar there are some differences in our experiences and struggles. What makes many of our fellow Black Latinos in our home countries a lot more fortunate then us in the States is that the culture is still very authentic. Its vibrant, alive and kicking, and raw. We in the U.S don't have direct connects to our culture as do our Brothers and Sisters in those countries.

What we are trying to do here and our biggest goal is to achieve acknowledgment and recognition through entertainment. This is how it all started for me. Being an actress in the States and wanting to play "black" plays but I was too "spanish" and "spanish" plays but I was too "black". So we took and are continuing to take the power and put it in our own hands creating movies and theater pieces about US. Whether the basis of the piece is about our experience here in America as Black Latinos or telling stories that all people from all walks of life can relate to but using an all Black Latino cast it is what we are doing and will continue to do.
