"Mi Negra"

Short and sweet and simply said "negra"

Negra translated into the female form of the color black.
Negro- the color black.

This term of endearment has been used so loose and
comfortably that we/they have gotten used to it.

So the other day a woman greeted me saying " hola mi negra",
y yo oblivious to what she had just said, greeted her as I
normally do.

Sweet as can be this woman is probably in her mid 50's,
and from a very different time period than I am.
I see her everyday in at my office kitchen,
while making my breakfast we chit chat.
We talk about anything really. Her family,
mine, what's going on that day, etc.
I never imagined that I would be writing about her.

I don't expect any type of contentment to come
from writing about this encounter nor am I upset
at the term or the person it came from.
It just opens my eyes on a larger scale.

It says a lot about the things that have been
ingrained in our people for a really long time.
How far back does this really go?

When did the color war actually start?

Shades of Color

What color r u?

So in an effort to find clarification on this topic I guess many
people especially those with young children are asked I
decided to put this out there. I'm sure there will be many
opinions and even disagreement concerning race and
nationality, we welcome this.

So as you know, our background is very diverse here
at the mvmt. That of our family is also and may
even be more so.

I came across this topic when a child under 5 in my
family told me that his mother said he was white.
(FYI - childs mother is hispanic)

Baffled and a little bothered as to why she would
confuse the child at such a young age, I started to question
how many people actually do the same. Or here's a better
one, what is the correct way to answer if a child asks...
what color am I?

Now I know a lot of people from our generation use the
word black to describe themselves interchangeably with
African American but what about the physical. I myself
am a black woman but don't even know what color I would
describe myself as. I would guess brown, again very vague
as there are many shades of brown but I'm sure most black
people would do the same. Common sense being that
there is no person that is describe as being the color black.

Now here comes the confusion, if you are a very light
shade of brown, would you call yourself white....

Dont Judge a Book....

So I was with an Assistant Director of mine who happens to be an African American older gentlemen. We were in the Bronx (NY) leaving a tv access channel from an interview we had and a group of young men passed us by. All 3 were dark skin and could have easier "passed" for being African American. But as we walked by them they were clearly speaking Spanish and my A.D said "you know in all my years I will still never get use to seeing people as dark as I am speaking Spanish".

And I of course just smiled.

I am so in love with Black Latinos and being a Black Latina. Our diversity is unparalleled to others. Call me egotistical or what have you but I love our ability to pull from two different cultures and backgrounds and call both our own. It is very intriguing and although there is some negativity behind it in regards to "picking a side" there are so many celebrities and other people advocating for who we are and showing our broad spectrum of who we are, where we have come from, our talents and contributions to society.

SO GO BLACK LATINOS!
