WE ARE LATINOS!

Here at the Black Latina Movement our agenda is not to separate "black latinos" from "white latinos". We are all one!

There was some confusion as someone recently said to me how are you uniting your people when you are creating a sub-group and in essence causing another division. No that is not my intention and I apologize as of now if that is how it has been taken.

The division was not created by me it was decades in the making when being white or associated with being white was the supreme race and the way to be. We as Blacks were divide and then Latinos even further as we wound up not knowing where to fit. And unless you went for higher education or took it upon yourself to know the difference you would know that Latino is not a race but rather an ethnicity.

So the purpose of what I wanted to do is create a forum and place to give a voice for Black Latinos as we have been so removed from common society at times.

I did not create this problem but I want to shine light on it and create a resolution for it.

I wish things were different and we were not divided as Latinos but a perfect world we do not live in. So the best I can do is show who we are. It is not about dividing us but providing acknowledge to my group of people.

Our Youth

So while on vacation I hear a child say nigga.

Child yes I said child... a Latinos nonetheless. He was about 4 years old.

Now my son had been playing with this boy and in a knee jerk reaction I grabs my boy and say if you ever say that word I am going to break your face. Lol lol ok calm down Child Services I don't abuse my child. But the seriousness of that word burned me.

At home we do not talk in terms of color, my partner in the BLM asked him recently "Matthew what are you" and he relied simply "Titi Apryl I am Matthew". I don't try to avoid the topic as I am a mother to 2 Black Latinos BUT why do we need to impose social labels on our youth.

Tainting the minds of the pure.

Eventually I will have to break it down to him and his brother as I dont want society to teach my sons as we know the great job it has done already. And with a 4 years old going around saying the word nigga who knows what other parents are teaching their children and allowing them to say is ok.

Now don't get me wrong I am no martry and I have use the word like many in my generation as a term outside of the orginial purpose taking the power out of the word. And I understand both sides of the spectrum. I watched the Oprah/Jayz interview and that was his arguement as hers was- think of the slaves or blacks that were lynched who died and that was the last word they hear.

So my feelings have definitely changed in regards to the word... as it resoundated so close to home for me.

Vacation Revelations

It was so amazing to visit 4 countries and see such a strong presence of Black Latinos.

From Honduras to Belize, Mexico and even the Cayman Islands to see people of color that from the naked eye u would think were "black" or "African" but were Latino gave me such a fuzzy feeling inside.

Coming from the states as I have stated so many times before is a different situation and atmosphere in regards to Black Latinos. I can see it is no surprise and pretty much part of everyday life in our neighboring continents of Central and South America. Where as in the U.S it is still new, unique and at times presents stigmas.

That is the basis of why the Black Latina Movement pushes in the U.S.
Most social and society ideas come from entertainment and in "Hollywood" u don't see much Black Latinos or roles that tell our double identity. Some call it a Double Minority while I call it a Double Blessing. And unfortunately Latino stations and networks do it too.

But it is one step at a time.

It will take time but if I can even scratch the surface in the states I feel a sense of accomplishment already!

CUBA

So on the first day of vacation we were off the coast of Cuba headed toward the Cayman Islands. And I thought wow how cool is that miles from Cuba a country that I know is immerse in Black Latino culture!

But sadly enough as an American this is something that I won't be able to experience because of political issues.

I mean I know there are ways to get there, let's be for real there is always a way to get around everything BUT the fact still remains I can't walk into JFK, LAX or any American airport and just get a straight flight to Cuba.

Hopefully in my lifetime I will be able to!

Who knows the treasure that lie within that country and answers, culture and beauty of being a Black Latino that Cuba holds. The pride and strength that comes from then. One of their greatest gems, a known Cuban and famous Black Latina the late Celcia Cruz was birthed in such a country...and if that is a window or glimpse to the wonderment of what lies there who knows the countless other amazing things that country has in regards to Black Latino Culture.
