To Speak or not to speak that is the question!

Not knowing spanish is such an obstacle.

People make it seem as those it is a matter of national security. And what kills me is if u have one person doing a lot of our people and accomplishing so much but does not speak spanish and another person who just speaks spanish but doesn't do much for our communities it is almost as if the spanish speaking person is more "latino" or intune with being latino because they speak spanish.

I am baffled by this... How could this be, the ignornance is so fustrating... Really it is...

Knowing the language although it is an advantage to some it is not what determines u or your "latino-ness". It is stupid to think people are measured based off of that. What makes a person that speaks spanish more latino then someone who does not?

A person once tried to speak to me in spanish and although I understood I couldnt quite compose a sentence and the line I frequently get that just tickles my fancy is ooohhhh I thought u were latino-----SORRY!

Since the government is the major contributor in keeping ‘Race’ at the forefront in this country via the Office of Management and Budget's Statistical Policy Directive No.15, Race and Ethnic Standards for Federal Statistics and Administrative Reporting, I’ve wondered about the difference between race and ethnicity. The simplest definition I’ve been able to discover is Race describes biological descent and Ethnicity describes cultural heritage. Therefore, a person can not be denied their race, but they can be denied the contributions of their culture. Speaking Spanish is a cultural heritage that unfortunately is not always taught from parent to child in this country due to individual reasons of the parent. My wife and siblings are all bilingual speaking both English and Spanish fluently having been raised in a community that spoke mostly Spanish. They were not only taught it, but they were expected to learn it for survival as part of that community. However, now that they are living in communities that speak mostly English, the desire to teach their children Spanish isn’t there nor is the need there for their survival. So clearly they are of the Black & Latin Races, but are being denied that part of their cultural heritage as many are. Some parents feel their kids would better assimilate into the American culture without having an accent or they themselves never learned Spanish so they couldn’t teach it to their own kids. I feel the more languages you are able to speak, the more it would benefit you as an individual by possessing the ability to communicate with difference Ethnic groups or at least be hired or paid a little more to act as a translator. With all that being said, although being denied learning your cultural language makes you no less a part of that Race, some see it as making you less part of that Ethnic group even though there are other cultural heritages that you may practice that you’ve learned or were handed down from the past by tradition and custom. This is much like how it is for Blacks or if the term African/Afro-American is preferred, in America, we were denied our cultural language and it was frowned upon to practice traditions and customs of the mother land so our being less African is always a topic of discussion, but not of being Black. It was such an issue that I remember back in the 1990’s how Blacks began wearing the traditional African clothing to better express their African heritage, but I don’t remember too much of a desire of anyone to learn any of the estimated 2000 languages spoken in Africa. Is it fair for someone to see you as being less of a race or ethnic group because you don’t share the majority of that race’s physical features or speak that ethnic group’s language? No! It’s not fair. But in America, it’s expected.
