Shades of Color

What color r u?
 
So in an effort to find clarification on this topic I guess many 

people especially those with young children are asked I 

decided to put this out there. I'm sure there will be many 

opinions and even disagreement concerning race and 

nationality, we welcome this.
 

So as you know, our background is very diverse here 

at the mvmt. That of our family is also and may 

even be more so.
 

I came across this topic when a child under 5 in my 

family told me that his mother said he was white. 

(FYI - childs mother is hispanic)
 

Baffled and a little bothered as to why she would 

confuse the child at such a young age, I started to question 

how many people actually do the same. Or here's a better 

one, what is the correct way to answer if a child asks...

what color am I? 
 

Now I know a lot of people from our generation use the 

word black to describe themselves interchangeably with 

African American but what about the physical. I myself 

am a black woman but don't even know what color I would 

describe myself as. I would guess brown, again very vague 

as there are many shades of brown but I'm sure most black 

people would do the same. Common sense being that 

there is no person that is describe as being the color black.
 

Now here comes the confusion, if you are a very light 

shade of brown, would you call yourself white....
