Dont Judge a Book....

So I was with an Assistant Director of mine who happens to be an African American older gentlemen. We were in the Bronx (NY) leaving a tv access channel from an interview we had and a group of young men passed us by. All 3 were dark skin and could have easier "passed" for being African American. But as we walked by them they were clearly speaking Spanish and my A.D said "you know in all my years I will still never get use to seeing people as dark as I am speaking Spanish".

And I of course just smiled.

I am so in love with Black Latinos and being a Black Latina. Our diversity is unparalleled to others. Call me egotistical or what have you but I love our ability to pull from two different cultures and backgrounds and call both our own. It is very intriguing and although there is some negativity behind it in regards to "picking a side" there are so many celebrities and other people advocating for who we are and showing our broad spectrum of who we are, where we have come from, our talents and contributions to society.

SO GO BLACK LATINOS!

first, I'd like to applaud you for starting this blog. Hispanics/Latinos of African descent need a positive outlet to celebrate their culture, language, and the beauty of their complexion.For too long, we've allowed the media to perpetuate the idea that J.Lo is the standard and being black/dark is a negative thing. 2 I'd like to disagree with you when you say that the only sign of the African presence in Afro-Latinos is the physical features. On the contrary, the music, custom, religious practices and even some words in Cuba, DR, Brazil, etc are firmly rooted in an African heritage.

In my blog piece about clarification I address the topic of African presence. In the North (United States) we are not as closely connected to our African Heritage as the countries you mentioned (Cuba, DR, Brazil). So I am trying to push follow the ideas of those the came before me, that although we are Americans we also need to embrace and remember our backgrounds. We have a "double identity" and though there are aspects of our cultures that was lost through slavery it is our responsibility to find who we truly are!
