Women of Color Uniting not Bickering

So as a women of color in an all male dominated industry (Entertainment/media) I have noticed women in high positions are scarce. Many of us that are in the industry are loners doing our own thing. Now there is nothing wrong with working on your own projects BUT then we shouldn't complain about there not being unity in the community.

In order to see that change you must create the change, ESPECIALLY if you are in the position to help those on the "come up". I see up and coming Producers and Directors all that time that ask for my help.

No I am not a martyr.

I am a business women and I am working extremely hard on my projects but when and where there is time I will help others. Just as in life, this business is funny and you never know when you will need help; possibly the help of the same person you showed no "love" to. Remember those sayings "one hand washes the other" and "there is power in numbers"?

Well there is power in those words!!! Now I don't say help only with an alterior motive, like the fear of possibly needing someone and not receiving their help, BUT if there was someone in your field who could have helped make your plight smoother wouldn't you have wanted them to PAY IT FORWARD!?

What Are You?

The other day I was coming home from an amazing shoot for the Movement and I went to my mom’s house to pick up my oldest son. I get there and my son is in tears while my mom’s level of anger is through the roof.

Apparently race came up in the house and when she told my 7 year old he was Black, he told her he didn't want to be Black. Now outside of the Movement, Civil Rights activism runs extremely deep within my family as my Great Grandfather (in addition to many other things) was an attendee to the famous MLK march on Washington.

So to mediate the situation I take my boy to the side and I asked him “what are you?” He replies “I am Brown skin”, and it dawned on me that children are as pure as they are literal. My son was bothered to be called a color that for him doesn't exist within the human species.

In my home I do not teach color in that sense and my mother wasn't aware of that. Coincidently my mother is married to what we would call a White man. When he entered I asked my son what was he and he gave the classic Indigenous people name; he said pale/pink.

Pride and Prejudice

Why do we refer to eachother a colors?
Were we raised that way, did our parents refer to others the same way?
 And how will we teach our children, is this right or wrong?
I sat on the infamous NYC subway the other day and watched two Latinas talk, proudly they spoke bits of spanish but mainly english which lead me to believe they were a later generation. They were young, couldn't have been no more than 23yrs old. They talked about men or are they still called boys @ that age?..anyhow there was one thing in particular that made me think about this color war.
When referring to their black friend they said he's cute for a moreno ( translation he's cute for a black
guy).Now I by no means want to single these latinas out but what did they mean for a black guy. The term moreno is a whole different topic, but since when did black suddenly become the ugly yet again.
I know we refer to other races as colors i.e. White ppl, but this was very interesting to hear on so many levels.
