Fear

Many times I see and find out about countless Black Latino celebrities/actors and I wonder why has no one come forth and build the foundation for Black Latinos in the media.

Why does it seem like it is every man for themselves?

Yes we all have to make a living and provide for our own before we can provide for others but we also have to know that there is a community of people, our own people that rely on us to represent them.

I wonder what could it be? Is it fear of the backlash they will receive from separating themselves from the Latino population by calling themselves Black? Not to mention being American? Or being blackballed or blacklisted?

Funny how all of those negative terms have the word "Black" in them.

I mean so many other communities uplift themselves and show support but why is that not the same for Black Latinos. We are far from a new sub-group when you think of those like Celia Cruz and the time in which she rose to fame, she was one of the oldest and most well known Black Latinas. I am baffled as to how many of us are out there and yet no real social stance has been taken to push acknowledgement.

Is it not of importance?

Good post! I hope, someday, to learn the answers to what you are asking myself.
From my observations, as one exploring Latino cultures, I notice black Latinos see themselves by their nationalities first and their race second; if at all. Unlike the African-American community, I see Afro-Latinos (men and women) mixing with white and brown Latinos and producing mixed children. I'm not knocking it; love is love. I'm just wondering if this has anything to do with their reluctance to celebrate their blackness. It's definitely important but I think that mainstream Latino media and African-American media haven't found ways to integrate the Afro-Latino identity. The main American show that I've seen do a good job at this is Scrubs with actress Judy Reyes. The dialogue between her and her husband Turk was so interesting as they talked about what their child would look like, what her name should be, etc. When they brought her family on the show, there were various shades and hair textures among her brothers and sisters. The show integrated the identity piece where it wasn't always serious, too. It was comedy but it was real life. This is important to me because I feel she probably played a major role in ensuring that her identity was presented in its truest form, that she wouldn't simply be on the show as an "ambiguous other" or someone of Af-Am background. Not to say AT ALL that it is something wrong with her portraying an Af-Am woman (b/c my mother is and I love all parts of my identity and being black on both sides), but to a certain extent when you want to make your mark or be representative of a group, that becomes important. There are so many AfroLatinos who play African-Americans but I feel it would be a great learning opportunities if they could play characters that represent their latinidad at the same time. From my understanding Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro-fresh prince) has AfroCuban parents, Big Work (Friday) had AfroCuban parents, etc. etc. The list could go on Laz Alonzo... especially Black actors in 90s African American tv shows and movies...

The fine line is being about to celebrate your identity without creating this hierarchy. How do we as afrolatin@s see ourselves? How do we differ and the importance of our identity (and the performance, acknowledge of it and our cultural ties) differs based on 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation? I could go on and on but will stop here!
