Our Youth

So while on vacation I hear a child say nigga.

Child yes I said child... a Latinos nonetheless. He was about 4 years old.

Now my son had been playing with this boy and in a knee jerk reaction I grabs my boy and say if you ever say that word I am going to break your face. Lol lol ok calm down Child Services I don't abuse my child. But the seriousness of that word burned me.

At home we do not talk in terms of color, my partner in the BLM asked him recently "Matthew what are you" and he relied simply "Titi Apryl I am Matthew". I don't try to avoid the topic as I am a mother to 2 Black Latinos BUT why do we need to impose social labels on our youth.

Tainting the minds of the pure.

Eventually I will have to break it down to him and his brother as I dont want society to teach my sons as we know the great job it has done already. And with a 4 years old going around saying the word nigga who knows what other parents are teaching their children and allowing them to say is ok.

Now don't get me wrong I am no martry and I have use the word like many in my generation as a term outside of the orginial purpose taking the power out of the word. And I understand both sides of the spectrum. I watched the Oprah/Jayz interview and that was his arguement as hers was- think of the slaves or blacks that were lynched who died and that was the last word they hear.

So my feelings have definitely changed in regards to the word... as it resoundated so close to home for me.
